Important Difference

UPSC Has One Optional, But IFoS Has Two Optional Subjects

In UPSC Civil Services Examination / IAS Mains, candidates select only one optional subject. This optional subject has two papers. For example, if a student selects Mathematics Optional, he or she writes Mathematics Paper I and Mathematics Paper II.

In IFoS Mains, candidates have to select two optional subjects from the given optional subjects list. Each optional subject has two papers. So, IFoS optional selection needs more care because the student must choose a valid combination of two subjects.

Mathematics is an important optional subject for both UPSC CSE / IAS and IFoS aspirants. But in IFoS, Mathematics cannot be combined with Statistics because this combination is not allowed.

  • Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

  • Among Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, candidates cannot choose more than one engineering subject.
Important for Maths Optional students: IFoS aspirants can choose Mathematics as one optional subject, but they cannot choose Statistics as the second optional subject along with Mathematics.
Mathematics Optional

Mathematics as a Common Optional Subject for UPSC and IFoS

Mathematics is a strong optional subject for students who have studied Mathematics at graduation level or have a strong quantitative background. It is logical, method-based and scoring when prepared with proper concept clarity, regular practice and test writing.

For UPSC CSE / IAS, Mathematics is selected as one optional subject with Paper I and Paper II. For IFoS, Mathematics can be selected as one of the two optional subjects, but it cannot be combined with Statistics.
